Web design in Oxford
Pay-monthly websites for Oxford businesses, built by a small West Oxfordshire studio — without the overheads that come attached to a city-centre agency.
A harder market, and worth being honest about it
Oxford is not Witney. There are more web design firms here, more marketing budget in circulation, and considerably more competition for every worthwhile search term. Anyone promising you the top spot for “solicitors Oxford” inside three months is either inexperienced or hoping you won’t check.
What actually works in a market like this is narrower and slower. You win on the specific things you do and the specific parts of the city you serve, rather than the broadest possible term. “Emergency electrician Headington” is a winnable search with real intent behind it. “Electrician Oxford” is a long campaign against firms who have been at it for a decade.
Who we work with in Oxford
- Neighbourhood businesses. Trades, salons, clinics and shops serving Headington, Summertown, Jericho, Cowley, Botley and Iffley, where local search is genuinely winnable and converts well.
- Independent hospitality and retail. Cafés, restaurants and shops competing with much larger marketing budgets, where speed, accurate information and good photography count for more than spend.
- Professional and consultancy firms. Small practices that need to look established and be easy to engage, without a five-figure agency retainer.
- Trades covering city and county. Businesses working across Oxford and out into West Oxfordshire, which is a structure we build often and know well.
Why use a studio outside the city
Being twelve miles up the A40 is not a disadvantage for this work, and it has one concrete benefit: our costs are lower, so the same build costs you less. We’re close enough to meet in person whenever it’s useful, and the parts of the job that genuinely need us in a room with you are fewer than agencies tend to imply.
The trade-off worth stating plainly: we’re a small studio. If you need a large multi-language platform, a bespoke web application or an integrated CRM rollout, we’re not the right fit and we’ll tell you so at the first call rather than three weeks in. What we do well is fast, well-structured, well-maintained websites for businesses that want the phone to ring.
What to expect on timing
The build is the quick part — two to three weeks for a standard site. Search results in a market this size are the slow part. Expect to see local map-pack movement within a couple of months if your Google Business Profile has been neglected, and meaningful organic movement over six to twelve. Anyone quoting faster than that in Oxford is selling you something.
What it costs
Pay-monthly plans run from £45 a month for a five-page site up to £120 a month for an online shop — design, build, hosting, support and monthly changes all included, with nothing to pay upfront.
Prefer to own it? One-off builds start at £1495.
Local detail
Winning narrow searches instead of broad ones
The instinct in a competitive city is to chase the biggest term. “Builder Oxford” feels like the prize. In practice it is usually the worst use of a small budget, and understanding why changes what you should actually ask for.
Broad terms are expensive and convert worse
The firms holding the top spots for the broadest Oxford terms have generally been at it for years and have the backlinks to show for it. Displacing them is a long, costly campaign with an uncertain outcome.
Worse, the traffic is poorly qualified. Somebody searching a broad term is often at the browsing stage, comparing widely, and may not even be in your part of the city. You pay the most to reach the people least ready to buy.
Specific terms are winnable and convert better
“Emergency electrician Headington”, “sash window repair Jericho”, “sports massage Cowley” — each has a fraction of the volume, considerably less competition, and enormously higher intent. Somebody searching that way has a problem, a location and a willingness to act.
Ten such terms will generally out-earn one broad term, and you can realistically hold positions for all ten. That is the strategy we build for.
Oxford is really a set of neighbourhoods
People here search by area far more than in most cities. Headington, Summertown, Jericho, Cowley, Botley, Iffley and Marston behave almost like separate local markets, and Google treats them that way. Serving three or four of them with genuine, specific pages is a realistic goal for a small business. Owning “Oxford” outright is not.
Expect months, not weeks
If your Google Business Profile has been neglected, fixing it can move the map results within a few weeks — that is usually the fastest win available. Organic movement in a market this size takes six to twelve months of a technically sound site plus content that genuinely deserves to rank.
Anyone quoting faster than that in Oxford is either guessing or selling. We would rather set a realistic expectation and beat it.
Oxford questions
Can you get us to number one on Google in Oxford?
Nobody can promise that, and we won’t. What we can do is build a technically sound, fast, well-structured site, set your Google Business Profile up properly, and target the specific searches you can realistically win.
For most local businesses that produces far more enquiries than chasing one broad, heavily contested term ever would.
Are you cheaper than an Oxford agency?
Generally, yes — our overheads are lower and we’re a small team. Our prices are published on the pricing page so you can compare directly rather than sitting through a meeting to find out.
Do you do SEO on its own, without a website build?
Only as part of hosting and looking after a site. We’re not a standalone SEO agency, and in a market like Oxford you’d be better served by a specialist if that’s all you need.
What’s included in every plan is the groundwork — structure, speed, schema, Google Business Profile, Search Console — which is where most small sites are losing ground anyway.
Which Oxford areas can we realistically rank for?
Usually three or four, chosen around where you are based and where your best work comes from. Spreading thinly across every neighbourhood produces pages too weak to rank anywhere.
We will look at what you are already getting enquiries from and build outward from that rather than guessing.
Do we need a bigger plan because Oxford is competitive?
Often yes, but not always. Competitive markets reward depth of content, and Starter’s five pages will not cover several services across several neighbourhoods.
If you have one service and one area, Starter is genuinely enough and we will tell you so rather than upselling on the strength of your postcode.
